Bringing Alverno students, faculty, and staff together for community building and service

This year, we will be focusing on building and serving community to make Community Day every day.

Undergraduate classes are cancelled until 4 p.m. to allow for participation.  We challenge you to choose to use your day to engage with the Alverno Community!

9:15 a.m. Keynote from alumna Holly McCoy

Sites

Participants will sign up for one site to participate in from 9:45 – 11:45 a.m.  The sites are listed below:

Outdoor/Environmental

Jackson Park Clean Up

Ride your bike to Jackson Park and pick up trash around the water (must provide your own bike).

Athletics Highway Clean Up

Go with the Athletics Department to clean up their sponsored section of the highway.

Bioswale

Clean and weed the campus bioswale.

Rain Garden

Learn about rain gardens and clean out the rain garden to prepare it for winter.

On-Campus Service

Archives

Assist with clearing out the new location for the Alverno Archives and setting up a space for faculty, staff and students to repurpose some of the items.

St. Ben's Sandwich Making

Learn about how providing food for the homeless reflects our Franciscan values while making PB&J sandwiches.

Music Therapy Virtual Appointment Space

Create a space for music therapy students to host virtual appointments for their clients on campus.

CLAS Mural

Take part in creating a unique piece of art that will provide decoration and inspire guests in the new Center for Learning and Assessment Support.

On-Campus Effective Citizenship

The Art of Voting

Get creative and help encourage campus-wide voting in the November election with the following activities:

  • Screen print the logo My Voice! My Vote! (Bring your own t shirt/canvas bag to print on, a piece of fabric to create a printed bandana, or you can print on paper to make a poster for your room)
  • Create a signature piece of statement jewelry to let everyone know you’re voting this November!
  • Work with others to design a dynamic bulletin board on campus to encourage people to register to vote, early vote, or vote the day of the election.
ACLU Voting Discussion

Participants will take part in an engaging and interactive dialogue about why your vote matters and voting rights.

Connecting the Dots – Volunteering Discussion

Find the connections between volunteering, the 8 Abilities and your future.

Blood Pressure Screening and Info Session

The Hispanic Nurses Association will be completing blood pressure screenings and hosting an educational session about blood pressure and health.

Crafting for a Cause

T-Shirt Bag Making

Repurpose old Alverno shirts into reusable grocery bags that can be used in the Alverno Food Pantry.

Knitting or Crocheting Hats

Knit or crochet hats that will be donated to Operation Chemo Comfort. Volunteers should bring their own knitting needles or crochet hooks and know how to knit or crochet. Yarn will be provided.
