Advantages to Employers
How will you benefit by mentoring an Alverno intern?
You will have an opportunity to:
- Get needed work done that might not otherwise be completed
- See your work/procedures etc. from the perspective of a fresh pair of eyes
- Recruit/screen possible new hires
- Have the satisfaction of assisting a student in her educational growth and development
- Contribute to the development of qualified workers for the future
- Connect with faculty and bridge the gap between education and the world of work
AND as an additional bonus:
- Your intern is prepared for work by the rigorous training of Alverno's curriculum.
- Your intern is supported by Alverno faculty to help her succeed in her internship. She either attends a seminar or is monitored individually by faculty from her discipline department for the duration of the internship.
- Your intern is highly motivated. She needs to successfully complete her work with you in order to receive academic credit for the internship.
Internship Process
Process for offering internships to Alverno students:
- Identify a project or ongoing work of a professional nature. Create a job description that includes the skills a student would need to have.
- Post the opportunity on Handshake, our electronic job board. Internship opportunities should be made available well in advance of the semester you need an intern (January for summer and fall internships, and September for spring internships).
- Interested students will send their resume.
- Interview and select an intern.
- Review the requirements for employers below.

- Interview and select an intern.
- Make arrangements with the intern for dates and times she will work. We require students to work at the site 8 to 12 hours a week for the duration of the semester, or 120 to 180 hours total during the summer.

- Provide direction and give feedback on an ongoing basis.
- Meet with us at your site (or by Zoom) for a mid-semester check-in regarding how the student is doing.
- Fill out and/or sign four internship forms which track and document the intern's progress:
- A description of the student's work at the site (to be filled out by the mentor)
- A description (to be filled out by the student) of their learning goals for this site
- A mid-term evaluation of the student (to be filled out by the mentor and reviewed with the student)
