Coaches Take a Pie to the Face For a Good Cause
November 26, 2019
Alverno College Athletics coaches are willing to do just about anything to help those who are less fortunate in our community, and that includes getting a pie in the face.
Students, faculty and staff have been collecting non-perishable food items as well as cash to benefit Hunger Task Force and our own campus food pantry this holiday season. In addition to the food and cash collection, each of the coaches had a jar on their desk to collect coins. The coach who collected the most money won bragging rights while the “losers” got a pie in the face at lunch time. None of the coaches knew who would walk away pie-free until the last minute. Today's TMJ4 came out to cover the event.
The food and fundraising drive is part of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference food drive competition called Cans Across the Conference. Since 2006, the conference has organized a competitive food drive to benefit local charities. The conference consists of 13 private colleges and universities from Illinois and Wisconsin, and despite being the smallest athletics department in the league, Alverno has won the Cans Across the Conference competition nine years in a row. We're hoping to win the competition for the 10th straight year, but even if we don't it's a win all around because we're serving our community while helping others out.
In all, 5,920 food items have been collected and $1,275 raised so far. Donations will be accepted through mid-December.
