Alverno College Year in Review, 2023

As 2023 comes to a close, it is time to reflect on all that we have accomplished. This year saw new colleagues take on leadership roles, including our new president; exciting grants that will help our students pursue their education, train highly skilled professionals for in-demand careers, and train more women in STEM fields; recognitions for the good work that we do here; and the 50^th anniversary of our abilities-based curriculum. Here are some of the highlights from 2023:

Jeanie Lucy, a highly credentialed, experienced leader, was named dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, the largest of the college’s schools. Read more

The college was awarded a five-year, $2.89 million grant by the U.S. Department of Education to increase the number of highly trained, bilingual, and racially and ethnically diverse school-based mental health professionals, allowing us to make a huge difference in six southeastern Wisconsin school districts. Alverno also received a four-year, $360,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to help offset the costs of on-campus childcare for undergraduate and graduate students, allowing parents to focus on their degrees. Read more

In a unanimous decision by the Alverno College Board of Trustees, Christy L. Brown, former Chief Executive Officer for Girl Scouts Wisconsin Southeast, was named the ninth president of Alverno College. Read more

Alverno was selected as a First Scholars Network member for displaying a demonstrated commitment to improving experiences and advancing success for first-generation college students. Read more

Alverno College was given a three-year, $746,947 award by NASA to research and develop strategies to increase retention of women in STEM degree programs and fields. Alverno is one of only seven institutions to receive this funding. Read more

This year marks the 50^th anniversary of Alverno’s groundbreaking abilities-based curriculum. In the decades since the college launched the 8 Abilities, countless other colleges, universities and school districts across the country and around the world have come to Alverno to learn how we teach. For the 14th consecutive year, Alverno was recognized by U.S. News & World Report for our “strong commitment to teaching.” Alverno also received several other accolades. Read more

For the second year in a row, Alverno and Kohl’s teamed up to provide scholarships and mentoring opportunities for students. Read more

The Department of Education awarded Alverno a five-year, $1.24 million grant to train personnel at Minority-Serving Institutions to serve children with disabilities. This will allow the college to address a critical need for special education teachers throughout the state of Wisconsin. Read more
