The Dr. Mary Ann Schwartz & Dr. Richard Brewer Speaker Series event, Conscious Leaders, will engage Alverno students in a meaningful dialogue about women's pathways to
community leadership. Building from a recent study conducted by Research Center for Women and Girls, titled Women in Public Life -
Elected Officials, students will have the opportunity to hear and learn from women leading within diverse local communities.
Alverno College's Center for Academic Excellence, Thea Bowman Institute,
and Research Center for Women and Girls, with generous funding from Alverno alum Dr. Mary Ann Schwartz, invites attendees of the event to
listen to a panel of women leaders discuss their lived experiences - pathways to leadership, lessons learned, and
recommendations for the future - especially as their efforts relate to possessing a consciousness that leads to social action. Panel participants will include elected officials, local organization members, and Alverno alumni. There will be time for students to ask the panelists questions following the discussion.
The panelists' presentations will be accessible via the Research Center for Women and Girls’ website and social media platforms for those unable to attend the event in person.
After participating in the event, attendees will be able to:
- Articulate how scholarship can contribute to community dialogue
- Identify the role women leaders play in addressing social issues within local communities
- Demonstrate the importance of effective listening, questioning, and paraphrasing in communication
- Utilize introspective tools and strategies before, during, and after conversations to support reflective practice
- Participate in conversations that center on authenticity, growth, and social justice
